South & South East in Bloom Competition 2009

Battle
scooped some major awards at The South & South East in Bloom Awards ceremony in Brighton last week.
Two of our neighbourhood entries received top accolades of Outstanding Merit.   St Martins Gardening Club under the watchful eye of Shirley Massy, and Senlac Gardens no’s 1-6 directed by Stephen Rundle were both very delighted recipients.  St Martins Gardening Club fund most of their plants with an in-house gambling syndicate (!), whilst Senlac Gardens have reached this dizzy height (from a barren plot)  in just two years.  Beautiful Battle has supported both of these entries, and congratulate them. The community of Battle was justifiably rewarded with the Community Involvement Award.  You can all congratulate yourselves on a job well done. Battle Town again received a Higher Silver Gilt Award in the Small Town category. Guest of honour at Brighton was Chris Collins (Blue Peter gardener), who’s visit to Battle earlier this year was quite a memorable occasion.  I am delighted to say that he will be making a return visit next Spring, and in addition to his evening talk, he will be visiting children at one of our Primary Schools. Fifteen certificates of Excellence were also awarded to various individuals and groups who have contributed to In Bloom.  These will be presented at a ‘Thank you’ Evening in October.

South & South East in Bloom Competition 2008
For many years the Battle Town Council has entered the annual South & South East in Bloom competition currently sponsored by Southern Water. This year the Town Council agreed to delegate the task to the voluntary group Beautiful Battle, to organise and manage the town's entry in the "Small Town" category.

Because of the constraints on the Town Council's financial resources Beautiful Battle also raises the majority of the funding necessary to cover the costs of new projects and the on-going maintenance of those sites. This is achieved by raising general awareness in the town of our overall objectives, seeking sponsorship from local businesses, obtaining grants (where available), running fund-raising events throughout the year, seeking individual cash donations and enlisting more volunteers or seeking other "benefits in kind".

In addition Beautiful Battle supported other parts of the community and encouraged them to enter other categories. These included four separate entries in the "Neighbourhood" category and three entries in the "Schools" category.

Below is a summary of the achievements in the various categories in what turned out to be the most successful year ever in Battle's history of entering this competition.

The judges were very impressed by the "Cottage Garden" constructed outside the Ambulance station by the students of Ivyland Farm Special School. The picture shows them discussing the project with College staff  Sarah Harper and Lucy Andrew who designed the scheme and supervised its construction by the students, many of whom have learning difficulties.

The students not only grew the plants and planted the bed but also constructed the wattle fence, archway and gate leading into the garden. They were delighted to be awarded a SE in Bloom Certificate of Excellence

The dry garden was designed by John and Pam Robbins and they were helped in the construction by a scouting volunteer as his "community" contribution to a Queen's Scout Award. It was awarded a SE in Bloom Certificate of Excellence.

The grass verge is also being maintained by two volunteers from Glengorse who cut the grass regularly through the summer.
